Ready for School

An Early Childhood Curriculum for Limited/Non-English Speaking Parents and Children Ages 3-4

(Early Literacy Project for Refugee Children)

Developed in Partnership with Literacy ConneXus and Cooperative Baptist Fellowship

The Ready for School Program grew out of the recognition of the growing number of newly resettled refugee children who were entering Pre-Kindergarten or Kindergarten without the necessary skills to succeed. Many of their parents’ home countries do not have children’s literature in their first language and culturally there is no history of parents reading to their children. Some of the refugee parents have limited English language skills and very few homes have children’s books in English.

The goal of the program is to prepare the children and their families for early childhood (Pre-K and Kindergarten) classes in American schools. The program is designed to be used with a group of children ages 3–4 who are not enrolled in school and their parents (at least one). Class will be once a week for 20 weeks during the school calendar beginning in September. The children will receive books weekly to take home and at the end of the year will be given a small wooden bookshelf for their home library.
