Ride for Refuge 2011

From Marc Wyatt:

Kim, Rebecca, Jon Marc and I are doing something pretty cool as a family this summer. We've formed a bike team, Furniture Bikers, to help raise awareness of the needs of refugees and others in need and how the Furniture Bank is helping meet those needs by participating in Ride for Refuge 2011 - Canada.

Would you and a friend or your family or main squeeze join us and ride and raise much needed funds too?

Neat thing about the Ride for Refuge - some folks participating on our team and on other teams will be doing so from as far away as Philadelphia, Toronto and even southern California. You don't have to live in Ottawa to be on our team. It's all about social networking. Some folks will be riding bikes, some walking, some spending an hour on their stationary bike at the gym and some just volunteering to help us host the event here in Ottawa. And they will be sending emails, facebooking, tweeting and calling their friends and family from near and far to join them. Sky is the limit on who can join our team and support our team mates. We are pumped.

The Furniture Bank is a missional initative we helped create to recycle lightly used household items to refugees and others in need here in the National Capital Region. To date we are approaching 7000 persons served. In June we helped 60 families. And yesterday we saw 11 families pop in and take whatever they needed from the Furniture Bank and it was all free. But it isn't free to run the ministry. It costs $100 a day to run the ministry. We are trying to get 365 friends to join our team and help us raise all the funds we need to run the ministry for a year. That's why we need your help.

The Ride for Refuge is a cycling fundraiser that supports over 150 charitable partners who in turn support thousands more who are displaced, vulnerable or exploited - refugees, orphans, widows, street kids, the urban poor, homeless, victims of human trafficking - the list is extensive. This fall 6000+ other riders and volunteers in Canada and the USA will raise $1,300,000 for some of the most marginalized people in our world.
