Afghan Immigrant Families
Home Church: Crossroads Church Fremont California

My focus is trying to meet the practical needs of Afghan families. We (Rick and Lita Sample & I) help with food, household items, school supplies, information, and explaining government forms.  Evangelism is the underlying motivation in that we want to communicate the message of hope in Jesus Christ through ways in which we meet refugee needs.

(Right) G’s 1st birthday. He was born in the U.S. This is the kind of food served for special occasions.  His daddy is fighting in Afghanistan.  I help G’s mom; we go shopping, to the Afghan store, and to the doctor.

(Below) Last summer, Bridges Church loaned us their big church bus and we all went out to Sonoma to go cherry picking.  You could pick huge buckets of cherries for $12.  Plus while we were picking many of us were sampling the cherries!  Fruit is an important part of Afghan culture and cuisine, and cherries are a special favorite.

When they announced the new president of Afghanistan, we went to a big lunch at the home of one of the ladies who is in the ESL class. Here a woman is playing an instrument like a tambourine; they beat out a rhythm to sing to.  The women sing folklore songs about romance and love!  They all know the chorus and sing these songs passed down from generation to generation.  Some are humorous as often they all break out laughing at the same time.
