Opportunities to Serve in Brussels

Short term mission teams:

  1. ESL camps for neighborhood children during Spring Break or the first week in the summer*. These teams can come in and provide elementary English skills for children ages 5-12 during their breaks from school in a fun and exciting way. In the past these camps have been held in the morning hours. The teams have provided the teachers and prepared the material before their arrival. They are able to connect with the community in a different way. Normally the Centre Oasis provides classes for adults and this allows people to come in the doors through a different avenue.
  2. Experiential Prayer Week*. This is a week that provides first hand exposure to the Muslim world and allows teams members to effectively pray for North Africans and people from the Middle East. Since the Centre is located in a Muslim neighborhood it provides a perfect opportunity to become immersed in this culture while remaining on European soil. Teams will interact with Muslims as well as Christian Arabs in the community. They will hear their stories, see where they worship, eat their food, learn a few words in their language, walk where they walk and all the while learning and praying for the needs of these people.
  3. Construction Week*.  This week allows a team of people to come into the neighborhood and stay at the Centre Oasis, an old 3-story building in need of some loving care. Currently the building has some water damage. It is in need of some roofing repairs in places, painting, light construction work and heating work. It is certain there are other needs that can be found with professionals on the job. There is also an opportunity to help out with the construction needs at the Arab church as well as other churches in the Union of Belgian Baptists.

Longer term mission opportunities:

  1. Semester long ESL teacher. There is always a need for another teacher to come for approximately 6 months and teach English to adults at the Centre Oasis. The person would be able to live in a small apartment on the bottom floor of the Centre. If this person was recently a student, he or she could apply through CBF’s Student.Go program. A person could also be sent through their church and would need to cover their round trip flight cost, as well as food, metro tickets, and short term international insurance.

*In the past, most teams have fit into one of these 3 categories. However, future needs may come up that could allow for a different opportunity. Also Janée is happy to find creative new ways for any willing to partner in ministry in Belgium. These teams normally stay at the Centre Oasis and provide their own food and transportation while there.
